Story Title: Ryu-Jin and Ryu-Min
Summary: Ryu-Jin thinks he's ruined his twin sister
Author's Note: Ryu-Jin and Ryu-Min are Mason and Yuri's twins. Ryu-Min suffers from depression.

I. 2036; age 17

He slouched in the chair, leaning back on it as casually as you please. He always acted that way – casual, happy, completely in control. Sometimes she wondered if it was all a lie; somehow she knew it wasn’t – that sort of pissed her off.

“Is there a reason you wanted to see me today?” She leaned back into her own chair. “Is it about your sister?”

He shrugged. “I guess, yeah. Ryu-Min’s been trying really hard to be happy lately.”

“Isn’t that a good thing?”

A shrug. “I have mixed feelings on the subject, actually. Ryu-Min tries really hard, but the closest she gets is being happy-ish.” He sighs deeply. “I think it’s my fault, Doctor.” Noticing her raised eyebrow, he goes on. “We’re twins; from womb to the tomb, as the Americans say. I think I must have gotten the good stuff. I’m happy, popular . . . she’s, well, not. I think I took all the good stuff and left her with the shit.”

“You think your sister is shit, Ryu-Jin?”

“I think her illness is shit, Doctor. What’s shit is that no matter what I do, I can’t help her.”

“Well, that’s somewhere to start, I’d say.”

II. 2041; age 22

All their lives, Ryu-Jin had tried to make Ryu-Min feel normal; happy. He knew he had failed when she ran away from home. For a while he tried to find her, but after a while it became very clear that she did not wish to be found. Ryu-Jin tried to think about it in the way Ryu-Min would; he knew that she must have thought they would be happier without her.

She was wrong, of course. But, it was too late to tell her that.

III. 2044; age 25

They wouldn’t let him into her room, so he took a plastic chair and placed it halfway into her doorway. She sat on the little iron bed, directly across from him. Her wrists were bandaged, her hair was loose and tangled, and her hospital pajamas were much too big.

He was the only one she had allowed in for a visit; he thought it was a good thing – she was trying to protect their parents. Their mother hadn’t stopped scrubbing the bathroom floor, even though the blood was long gone. Their father had crawled into a bottle of beer and had begun smoking again. Gun . . . Gun was considering himself a failure; he had thought he was saving her – making her better. Apparently, that hadn’t been the case.

“I was thinking, when you get out, maybe we could go on a trip; just the two of us. We could go visit Jin.”

Ryu-Min sniffed back tears. “I. . .” absentmindedly, she played with the edges of her bandages. “I would like that.”

Ryu-Jin smiled softly. “You have to tell me the next time you feel sad, okay? You have to tell me if someone is bullying you.” Ryu-Min nodded. “I thought. . .” he shook his head. “never mind. I, you’ll be okay.” Again, Ryu-Min nodded. “You’ll be fine.”

“I’ll be fine.” Ryu-Min repeated quietly, though he was sure it was said more for him than anything else. He was sure Ryu-Min didn’t believe her own words.

IV. 2044; age 25 – Part 2

He returned home to find Gun in the bedroom they had been sharing. Gun was sitting against the wall, distractedly playing with a piece of string. Wordlessly, Ryu-Jin joined Gun; taking the string from him and throwing it across the room.

“Ryu-Min is . . . better.” Ryu-Jin stated with a small smile. “She’s trying really hard again. She always tries so hard.”

Gun nodded sympathetically. “She’s like that.” He laughs softly under his breath. “You never have to try, but she never stops trying. You two really are opposites.”

“Sometimes I think I took all the happiness when we were in the womb. I became me and she became her, because I was greedy.”

Gun didn’t reject that idea; Ryu-Jin didn’t expect him to. Because there was a part of Ryu-Jin that knew his thesis was terribly true.

V. 2044; age 25 – Part 3

She came home on a warm winter day. Her bandages were still on her wrists. She found Ryu-Jin sitting in his room, leaning against the wall. Silently, she sat next time him; and leaned her head on his broad shoulder.

“Welcome home.” Ryu-Jin whispered.

“I’ m home,” Ryu-Min replied.

He could tell in her voice that she was trying very hard to be cheerful. Ryu-Jin wanted to be the same, but he felt rather depressed at that moment.

“Have I made you sad, Ryu-Jin?”

He shook his head. “No. No, I’m like you.”

“Happy-ish?”

Ryu-Jin nodded. “You make me happy, Ryu-Min.”

“You make me happy too, Ryu-Jin.”
