Summary: Chan-wook's children have and find their own children
Note: The year after each name is either the year the child was taken in or born.
01. Haru, 2016
Eddie writes a letter; a last letter to Geum Chan-wook, to their old Ahjuhssi. He tells Chan-wook how tiny Haru is, how the baby has already bonded with Aoi. Little Haru’s eyes are large and brown; his skin’s soft as Aoi’s shiny hair. He’s a little fat; his smile lights up a room.
When Haru looks at him, Eddie feels warm inside. There’s a protective feeling, too. Finally Eddie understands why Chan-wook took him in all those years ago; he needed a son and Eddie needed a father. He vows to be as great a father as his Ahjuhssi was.
02. Ryu-Jin and Ryu-Min, 2019
The twins are born in the late hours of the night; it’s drizzling outside. At first Mason thinks it’s a bad sign, but Yuri chides him for his foolishness. Mason holds his twins in his arms and feels that he’s finally needed; he’ll be there for them always. They are both so tiny, his son and his daughter. So small and helpless; yet, their eyes show a strength. Mason thinks Ryu-Min looks a bit like Ling’er, even if that’s impossible.
Mason writes Chan-wook an email that will never be sent: ”Ryu-Jin and Ryu-Min are now in the world. They’ll live well.”
03. Zen, 2019
Zen is a few months old when Eddie and Aoi take her in. They aren’t sure where she’s from -they find her Thailand, Eddie thinks she’s Japanese and Aoi’s sure she’s Korean – so they just call her Zen. She doesn’t cry much and she always smiles when someone is around her. Haru takes great pains in being a good older brother; Zen adores him.
Aoi visits the family hill. She pulls the weeds and tells everyone there is a new addition to the family. Aoi promises to bring Haru and Zen to visit soon; they must meet their family.
04. Mieko, 2020
Mieko is born too fast and at a bad moment. Jin has to deliver Mieko in the middle of a shopping center, much to the dismay of Jiro. Mieko’s a bit tiny and one of her feet isn’t right; but, she’s beautiful. She’s everything Jiro and Taka ever wanted.
The little family visits a beach. Taka has written something down, but it’s Jiro who yells it out to the ocean and beyond: “Ahjuhssi! Tell the whole of the afterlife that Oto Mieko was born! She’ll eat and live well, and it’s all because you took us in! Thank you.”
05. Sato and Sakura, 2020
The boy and girl are found at the same Japanese orphanage. At first Eddie only thinks of taking the ten year old boy, but the boy refuses to go anywhere without the two year old girl. In an odd way they remind Eddie of Jiro and Taka. Aoi renames the boy Sato and Sato renames the girl Sakura. Sato and Sakura are a fine addition to the family.
Eddie takes them to the family hill and introduces them to everyone. Watching Sato pay his respects to Chan-wook, Eddie thinks the boy will be his heir; just as he was Chan-wook’s.
06. Bo Ra, 2021
Bo Ra is ten. While Aoi and Eddie have found all their children thus far, it’s Bo Ra who finds them. She is a snotty little girl with a cruel strike, but Aoi insists she has talent. Bo Ra has a beauty about her and a talent for card games; she could be a perfect family member. And, she truly does need love.
Aoi writes her old Ahjuhssi a letter. She thanks him for saving her all those years ago, and she promises to save all of her children. She promises to pay special care to Bo Ra.
07. Gun, 2023
Gun is seven, Korean, and very very hungry. He’s the same age as Haru, but he’s shorter and more
warily. He’s a good boy and he likes Bo Ra. Eddie supposes that if the kid can stand to be around the moody preteen, than he’s fated to be a part of the family.
Eddie teaches Gun a few fighting moves that Chan-wook taught him; he quickly discovers that Gun is more of a fighter and less of a gambler. Eddie tells Gun all about the family and the way they have grown and changed over the years.
08. Sugihara, 2026
Kaori brings the five year old boy to Taka and Jiro. His mother, a Korean woman, has died and the boy needs a new home. Taka looks into the boy’s eyes, she calls him Sugihara and the two hug. Sugihara and Mieko bond quickly and soon the two are as close as twins.
Taka writes several notes and ties them onto the ends of balloons. She tells her children and Jiro that she is sending letters to Chan-wook, Takara, Ling’er, and the others. She’s sending the letters to let them know their family is growing.
09. Mae Ri, 2029
Aoi finds her around Christmas. She’s eight and reminds Aoi of Ling’er. Aoi calls the girl ‘my Mae Ri’. Eddie has a theory that Mae Ri is a gift from their old Ahjuhssi; a special girl to complete their family. Mae Ri fits in brilliantly with her new siblings and cousins. She truly is a fine girl and a gift.
Aoi goes to visit Chan-wook to thank him for her Mae Ri. She swears the sudden wind is Chan-wook’s reply of “You’re welcome.”
10. Hani, 2032
Jin takes a long time to find true love. When he does find love, he finds it with a younger woman who somehow reminds him of all three of his sisters, Kaori, and even the stories of Takara and Chan-wook’s aunt. She is called Hana; she tells Jin she’s been waiting for him.
They have a child, a daughter whom Jin names Hani. Hani is Jin’s treasure and he vows to always keep her safe. He makes a call to a phone number that hasn’t worked in over twenty years and leaves a simple message: “Thank you for saving me.”
