Story Title: Paradise Lost I
Story: AU: We Are
Summary: Jiro's getting revenge for Nojima Kazuko; but, whose going to get revenge for Masaki Taka?

I. The Poem

“Is this the Region, the Soil, the Clime, Said then the lost Arch Angel, this the seat. That we must change for Heaven, this mournful for that celestial light?” Shin-woo doesn’t even blink. His express is hard; scary. Jiro’s never seen him looking this way. “That’s from Paradise Lost.”

Jiro turns his gaze from Shin-woo and goes back to his list. Over the past few months he’s gotten revenge on so many of the people that hurt Taka, but he’s not quite done. He can feel Shin-woo’s eyes on the him, and Jiro wonders when the Hacker got to be so damn serious.

“It’s a poem.” Shin-woo’s lips curl up into something akin to a smile. “You remind me of a character in it.”

Jiro glances up at Shin-woo, a puzzled look on his face. “A character?”

Shin-woo nods steadily. “A character; Satan.” He pauses; his eyes grown dark. “And Masaki Taka is Eve. You think those kids showed her the horrors of humanity, but. . . the more this goes on, the more I think that honor falls to you, Oto Jiro.”

II. The Quote

“Is this the Region, the Soil, the Clime, Said then the lost Arch Angel, this the seat, that we must change for Heaven, this mournful for that celestial light?”

It’s something that echoes in Jiro’s head long after he’s left Shin-woo. That and; ” You think those kids showed her the horrors of humanity, but. . . the more this goes on, the more I think that honor falls to you, Oto Jiro.”

Jiro wonders how much that’s true. He’s trying to save her, but . . . it’s possible Shin-woo has a point. Because, no matter how many he kills, Taka still has her nightmares. She’s still broken and he can’t seem to fix her. Taka’s better, but she’ll never be whole; the damage was done long before he even met her. His revenge isn’t even helping him. It’s all. . .the same. He’s not so much destroying evil, as creating a new kind of evil within himself.

III. The Confrontation

Jiro’s brushing his teeth, when he notices Taka standing in the bathroom doorway. She watches him, her gaze steady, as he finishes up. When he turns to leave, she keeps her feet firmly on the floor; not moving.

“What?” Jiro smirks playfully. “Are we now close enough to be in here together?”

Taka shakes her head; not even her eyes smile. “Where did you go last night?”

He shrugs; tries to play it cool. “Nowhere important, around. I just took a stroll.”

“For fourteen hours? You went out at four and you came back at six.”

Jiro sighs deeply; exhausted. He gently moves Taka aside and walks out into the kitchen. Jiro can feel her steady gaze on the back of his head, as he gets a glass of water from the sink. He downs the water in one go, and turns around.

“You said we were a family.”

“We are a family.”

Taka takes a deep breath. “Families don’t lie to each other. No secrets. Are we not a family, because we aren’t related by blood? Or because we aren’t married?”

Jiro runs a hand through his hair. “The day after you turn twenty, we’ll get married. I’ve told you that before.” His voice has an edge to it now; it’s something he dislikes. It’s also a first when it comes to Taka. “And,” he tries to sound calm, but he knows he’s failing. He can tell by the fear in Taka’s eyes; she hates when voices are raised. “who says I’ve lied to you?”

“No. . .” she swallows. “no one walks around for fourteen hours. You leave and come back at all hours. You always look tired. You’ve told me not to read the newspapers or watch television, unless you’re at home. You know things that I don’t. You keep disappearing. And, each time you disappear, I feel like you’re going farther and farther away from me.”

He moves toward her, but stops himself from reaching out. “You’re not . . . I’m staying with you. We’ve decided to be a family, haven’t we?” Jiro feels tears forming in his eyes, but he ignores them. “I’m almost finished, I promise. Just don’t ask any more questions. Let me do this . . . for us, for you.”

There is a long silence, before Taka finally speaks;

“When I wake up tomorrow morning, you have to be here. If you aren’t – I won’t be here when you return.”

IV. The List

There’s blood on his hands, but that’s hardly new. Breathing hard, he feverishly washes his sticky hands in the sink of the mens' room in the train station.

In his pocket, there’s a piece of paper with a name and an address. It’s a scrap of his list; the list of all the people who harmed Nojima Kazuko during her life. He’s nearly done with it, and when he’s finished, he won’t have to lie anymore. He’ll start a new life, and a new list.

The new list will be for his revenge against all the people that have harmed Masaki Taka and Oto Jiro; Oto Jiro will be the first name on that list.
