Story Title: Lead to Hope
Summary: Gun thinks it could have gone better; Sakura gives hope by leading him to an new take on the situation
Author's Note: Takes place in 2038; Gun is 22 and Sakura is 20. Gun and Sakura are two of Eddie and Aoi's foster children.
In retrospect, Gun supposed it could have gone better. There could have been less yelling by Eddie, and Aoi could have held back on her overly dramatic gasp. Zen could have not made a gagging noise. Sato could have refrained from punching him in the face. Haru and Mae-Ri could have not looked at him in something akin disgust.
And Bo-Ra . . . Bo-Ra could have given him some hope; instead she had laughed. Laughed and asked him why he thought she’d ever be in love with him. Wasn’t he her little foster-brother; her beloved annoyance – like a stray cat you never get rid of. To Bo-Ra, Gun was a loser. That was what hurt the most.
“Are you crying?” Sakura’s voice was tiny, nervous. “I can’t hear you crying, but . . . if you are. . .”
Gun scoffed lightly under his breath. “I’m not crying.” He watched her intently as she felt her way down the tiny hill their home sat on. She awkwardly made her way to him and sat down on the stone steps that lead down to their neighborhood, smoothing out her skirt as she did so. “But, my manhood thanks you for asking before coming down.”
Smiling slyly, Sakura simply replied: “Your manhood shouldn’t even know I exist, Older Brother.” Not being able to stop himself Gun let out a loud laugh. “That’s much better. I like your laugh. It sounds like . . . uh . . . it’s dory.”
“The great Geum Gun is dorky?”
“Just his laugh. From what I understand the rest of you is tough.” Gracefully, Sakura felt her way over to Gun’s right hand and took it in hers. “What’s the view tonight? Cloudy? Is the moon out?”
“Sakura.”
“It’s getting colder. I think –“
“Sakura. Stop. You don’t have to try and make me feel better. Sato punched me, my ego’s bruised, but the rest will heal. I just wish Uncle and Mom weren’t so angry.”
“You did confuse to being in love with our oldest sister.” Sakura smiled softly. “That tends to anger parents and siblings.”
Squeezing her hand, Gun smiled at his foster-sister. For not the first time he wished she could see him. “Weren’t Uncle and Mom raised by the same guy?” He shook his head. “I forgot – that doesn’t count. He left before she came along. Oh . . . and she loved him back. Unlike Bo-Ra.”
“Bo-Ra is just being herself. She has all these big plans. Sadly, you don’t fit into them, at least not romantically. It’s not your fault or hers.” Sakura paused in deep reflection for a moment. “Aren’t you supposed to be really great at poker? Why couldn’t you read her face? Didn’t you know . . .?”
Sighing deeply, Gun nodded. “I knew. A part of me knew.” He swallowed hard, not wanting to cry in front of his little foster-sister. “I loved her since I was eight years old. It’s a bit difficult to get over that easily.”
“You’ve suffered. Fifteen years of one-sided love must hurt. Especially when you see that person going toward someone else . . . well, a lot of someone else. .. elses.” Feeling uneasiness in the air, Sakura cleared her throat. “What I mean is that sometimes you have to let your feelings out for the entire world to know. What you did upset lots of people, but in a few hours . . . or days, they’ll be back to normal. What matters is that you were true to yourself. That’s really brave, you know?”
Somehow Sakura’s words made Gun feel slightly better about his confusion and his family’s reactions. He wanted to return the favor, but wasn’t quite sure how to do that sort of thing. She was such a good sister, but he had nothing to give her in return for her kindness.
Gun squeezed Sakura’s hand. “Thanks."
