Story Title: Wrong One
Summary: Chan-wook reflects on who he thought would die first, and how wrong he was
Everybody dies. Everybody. You can try to stop it, delay it, but in the end – it comes. You’re born and you die; these are the only two certain things in this world.
I have witnessed a lot of deaths in my life: my parents, my aunt and uncle, my best friend, my teacher, the girl I thought of as my wife. They all died. I watched all of them die. I thought the next person I’d see die would be Masaki Taka.
In my mind, I saw it all; her death.
I pictured it quite plainly: she would turn twenty-two on a cool October day. That night, she would hang herself with a noose. Despite protests, Masaki Taka would keep her Noose Promise to her pathetic mama. I imaged we would celebrate during the day, all of us ignoring what would come. That night, she’s sleep beside Oto Jiro, the pair holding hands as they had done for years. We’d wake in the morning to find her hanging by her rope. She would be in a corner, her feet moving back and forth, her body already cold. Jiro, he’d be the calm one. He’d walk straight to her, cut her down, and carry Taka’s lifeless body outside. Jiro would hold her gently to him, cradling her like a precious gift.
We’d bury her beside Takara. That’s what I always thought. But, that’s not what happened.
Sara ‘Ling’er’ Ling died first. I wasn’t even there to see her go. She died two days ago, October 6st, 2011. Taka called me; she told me Ling’er was at the beach with Na Ji Sung. She told me Ling’er was very happy during her last few months. I wanted to ask things, like where the others angry at me or if there would be a funeral, but I didn’t. I couldn’t.
Today is October 8th, 2011. Masaki Taka is still alive, but Sara Ling is dead. And, I don’t think I’ll be able to stick around, to see if Taka keeps her Noose Promise. Everybody’s born and everybody dies. Everybody’s got a birthday and everybody’s got a death day. Today, well, today’s my death day. It looks like I’m going before Taka, but I wonder. . .
will she keep her promise?
