There’s a man called Geum Chan-wook. He’s a master at gambling. He’s a master at lying. He’s learned from the best. He teaches the best.

The card circles all know that if you want the best, you get Eddie in a game. When people first see him, they think its all tricks. Hand movements and flash; he moves cards like tiny dancers in his rough hands. But, then . . . they see it – he’s a master. Eddie’s not just flashy moves, he’s the best at cards. Any card game, from War to Bridge and everything in between – Eddie can play it. In between games, during those dull little moments, he lets the cards slip between his fingers; he puts on a show. His show lets the room know he’s the one to beat.

The game circles all remember Chan-wook’s second boy, Jin. He knew all the classic table games and the classic card games; especially the ones that only the old men play. Some say Jin played those games with more skill then any of the old geezers could dream of. Anything from Mahjong to Red Dog – if you wanted the best, you went to the teenager called Jin. At first people thought he was a cheat, then they discovered it – they boy had a God given skill. He could reason the outcome in his head. He knew the sums. That made him rather scary to all the other players.

The Gangsters and Thugs all know that if they want the best, you get Mason. He’ll beat anyone to a pulp – with his hands, bats, any weapon, he’s hardly picky. He knows all the right moves; he’s fast. Mason’s all hands and fight; pure rage and talent – he’s the best enforcer. He’s a master at his craft. And, it is a craft. Not everyone has the skills Mason has. The Gangsters and Thugs soon learn that he’s not just muscle, he’s got a keen military mind – he knows how to win a fight. He shows them that he’s worth having around. That makes him the best.

Everyone knows the one called Jiro. He gambles and fights, and while he’s not as good as his brothers, the boy has a certain spark. A certain something that keeps people interested; a certain flare that keeps the Bosses watching to see what Jiro’ll do next. He gambles and he takes jobs as an enforcer; he goes farther than his brothers when it comes to the jobs. He charms the ladies and the men – no one dares leave their lover with Jiro for long. He’s not so much a loose cannon as a Jack of All Trades; that makes him the best – a master. That makes him Geum Chan-wook’s boy.

The card circles all know Aoi. They know her beauty and her seductive features. They also know she’s the best at what she does. Though, what she does is up to debate. She can play – nearly as well as Eddie. But, she has a way of distracting her co-players with her kindness and the way she’s always chatting and smiling at them; like they’re friends. That, some say, is what makes her really dangerous – she gets your guard down and then goes in for the kill. She’s a master at the bait and switch – she makes the other players think she’s all light and looks – but she’s so much more. That makes her an assist; that makes her one of the best.

Everyone knows that if you want the best, you go to the one called Taka. She can make you into anyone you want to be, so long as you have the cash. When people first see her, they aren’t sure what to think. She’s not quite what they expect. She looks at them – through them, into them – and she makes them feel inferior. Taka makes them into new people, but she always makes sure they know it’s simply a paid favor – one day they’ll have to help her, too. She makes everyone question; she makes everyone wait for an answer. That makes her Chan-wook’s girl.

They all know that if you want to keep your wallet, you watch yourself around the one called Ling’er. She’s nearly blind, but that doesn’t stop her memory. She knows where wallets should be kept. Her hands move quickly and gracefully, like a ballerina. Her fingers long and thin, have a way of grabbing onto valuable things. Ling’er’s innocent looks hide a master thief. She’s nearly the best. Everyone is sure that one day, she’ll be just like Geum Chan-wook – a master of her craft. It’s that knowledge – the fact that at only fourteen she’s nearly a master – that makes everyone nervous.

There’s a man called Geum Chan-wook. He’s a master at gambling. He’s a master at lying. He’s learned from the best. He teaches the best.

That’s what makes everyone nervous – Chan-wook and his children, they’re all masters. They’re a one family crew of gamblers, enforces, forgers, thieves, and cons. They’re the Masters. If they wanted to, everyone is sure Geum and his kids could beat them all.
