Story Title: Phone Call
Summary: In the 1980s, Chan-wook calls Kaori to let her know how Takara is doing; Kaori doesn't seem to care.
Author's Note: As you'll recall, Takara was Kaori's younger sister, whom she "gave" to Chan-wook when she (Takara) was 17. This takes place a year afterward.
“Kaori?”
“Geum Chan-wook, are you calling to tell me about her?”
”It’s been a year and you haven’t called or written. I thought I’d let you know that we’re still alive and doing well.”
“I believe I made it clear when I gave her to you. I do not care what happens. She’s completely insane and a stain on my family. Unless she dies or kills someone, please don’t call me again.”
”Takara’s not insane, Kaori. She’s got schio. . .sch. . . Schizophrenia. Sometimes she hears voices, sure. And sometimes Takara gets a bit confused. But, she’s doing better with me. She’s happy. We’re happy.”
“We’re? Chan-wook are you getting close to that crazy girl?”
“Takara; her name is Takara. She’s your little sister. Call her by her name.”
“Chan-wook? I’d think you were in love the way you’re speaking.”
”Love? It’s called having human decency, Kaori. You used to have that, or I thought you did.” . . .Kaori, do you know Takara wants to see you? She asks about you a lot, but I’m never sure what to tell her.
“The truth is what I’d advise. I do not want to see her. You take care of her. You be the big protective brother. And, when she’s dead or in jail for murder, you can propose again, to try and make me feel better. Just like you did last time.”
”Kaori? Shut the fuck up. You’re a fucking bitch, do you know that? Takara is your sister. She loves you, but you . . . you treat her like she’s nothing. How can you speak with such vice in your voice?”
“Geum Chan-wook, I lived with her and her insanity for nearly three years. It’s been a year for you. Call me after you find her with her arms slit open, because voices told her to. Then you come back here, look me in the eyes, and tell me that you don’t hate that girl.”
”Kaori. Don’t pretend. You’ve always treated your sister like less than; like nothing. The thing is, I’ve never been able to figure out why.”
“I’m hanging up now.”
”Bye, Kaori.”
