Summary: Nojima Kazuko lives five years showing no emotions
There’s a rumor; she’s dirty.
There’s a rumor; if you beat her, she won’t fight back.
There’s a rumor; if you touch her – she won’t cry out for help.
There’s a rumor. . .
When she’s in her first year of junior high, Nojima Kazuko finds graffiti on her desk daily. Wordlessly, she sits down and quietly prepares for her lessons. A group of girls knock things out of Kazuko’s hands; they mock her for wearing a sweater in May.
When she’s in her second year of junior high, Nojima Kazuko finds her shoes missing from her locker and her books torn to pieces weekly. Wordlessly, she walks around school barefoot and studies solely from her notes.
When she’s in her third year of junior high, Nojima Kazuko she is fourteen. Kazuko is locked in toilet stalls. Water is dumped onto her – ruining her uniform. Wordlessly, she waits until a teacher finds her and lets her out. Kazuko doesn’t cry – she simply walks away and dries herself with towels.
When she’s in her first year of high school, Nojima Kazuko finds herself surrounded by girls. They pull her hair, push her to the ground, and kick her in the stomach. She covers her head, but doesn’t fight back. She doesn’t even make a sound.
When she’s in her second year of high school, Nojima Kazuko is cornered by a group of boys. They pull her and push her until she’s on the ground. She doesn’t struggle, even as they rip her clothes and hold her down. When it’s over she stays lying for several minutes before limping back to the group home.
When she’s in her second year of high school, Nojima Kazuko runs away from her group home. She runs back toward Tokyo. After five years, she’s tired and wants Jiro to make her feel alive again.
She finds herself spending her days sitting in parks and her nights in internet cafes. It is in one of her parks that she finds it, a tiny slip of paper with the words: Happy Birthday Takara! written in tiny and awkward kanji. Somehow the words make Nojima Kazuko feel warm and safe. She repeats the three words in her head over and over again. She repeats them until they are nothing but gibberish.
“Happy Birthday Takara. Tak. . .Taka. Happy Birthday Taka.” She decides she likes the name. She wants to be this new person, this Taka; to have a birthday, to be loved. That sounds like a nice idea to her. She wants to find Jiro, to tell him her new name. She’s a whole new person, a person who wants to be with a boy called Jiro.
