Author: Nichole
Rating: PG
Word Count: 500
Story Title: Seoul and Tokyo
Story: AU:We Are
Summary: The different lives of some of the different characters in the AU where Chan-wook never found his children, because Takara never died.

Seoul, South Korea:

I. ”I'm the one that's got to die when it's time for me to die, so let me live my life the way I want to.” ― Jimi Hendrix

Ji Sung calls her ‘Ling’er,’ because she likes it. Her birth name is Sara – the only thing she has from her birth mother – and she refuses to let him say the name. Ling’er’s parents and siblings shuffle in and out of her life, always looking but hardly ever touching. Only her half-sister (the daughter of the mistress) ever speaks.

“I might die soon.” She shrugs. “It makes them uncomfortable. You can’t fix me with money.”

“Surgeries costs money and they help.”

Ling’er giggles – her laughter is a bell. “After this one, I’m stopping. No one decides my life but me.”

II. “Why is it," he said, one time, at the subway entrance, "I feel I've known you so many years?"
"Because I like you," she said, "and I don't want anything from you.”
― Ray Bradbury, Fahrenheit 451

Mason lives on the streets. Yuri lives in a large house with a gate surrounding it. She’s the bastard daughter of a rich businessman. He’s the orphaned son of nobodies. He’s an artist. She’s a business student. They have nothing and everything in common. It’s why are pulled together.

Sometimes he looks at her and wonders why they even bother. It just won’t work. They come from such different places and. . .

“What do you even like about me?”

Yuri smiles, “You’re easy. You make me happy.”

“That’s all?”

She slips her hand into his. “Is there anything else?”

Tokyo, Japan:

I. “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot,
Nothing is going to get better. It's not.”
― Dr. Seuss, The Lorax

Jin becomes a police office because of his parents: an ex-con artist for a father and a genius schizophrenic for a mother. They saved him long ago; brought him back to Japan. He wants to help others in the way they helped him. He wants to make things better. As cliché as it sounds when he tells his supervisors that he wants to save the world, it’s the truth.

Jin believes that the world won’t change if he doesn’t work hard. He thinks about his younger self and his parents. He moves quickly up the ranks of the police department.

II. “But I didn't understand then. That I could hurt somebody so badly she would never recover. That a person can, just by living, damage another human being beyond repair.”
― Haruki Murakami

With a little help from Shin-woo he has made a list of people to kill for a ‘dead’ girl. She is dead in a way that isn’t real. Her body lives with a new identity, but who she once was is long gone. At first Jiro thinks it’s because of what happened when they were apart.

After a while, he begins to wonder if she was in a coma when they met again. Maybe he pulled the plug and killed her. Maybe he murdered her with his list.

He wants to fix her.

She may just be damaged beyond repair.

III. “I fell in love the way you fall asleep: slowly, then all at once.”
― John Green, The Fault in Our Stars

At first Eddie believes that he’s just paying for her company because he feels badly about her circumstances. He sees the other men and thinks he’s the better bet. He doesn’t force himself onto Aoi nor is he cruel. He’s a safe harbor in her world of sin.

Eddie cares for Aoi, though he’s not sure when he began to truly care. It must have happened slowly, over time. Or maybe it was all at once. One day he just looked at her and knew that he loved her; he wanted to save her.

Maybe she could save him too.
