Title: The Yellow Dress
Summary: Ling'er can be unbelievably cruel, even if she doesn't fully realize it.
Author's Note: So, in 2009 or so, Jin is visiting Chan-wook, Mason and Ling'er. This may be coming out of nowhere for some, but believe me it's been apart of the plan for a long while. It's one of the main conflicts for this character in the main story and the reason for his break with the family.
He bought her a yellow dress; she was sixteen now – a woman in some cultures. To Eddie, Mason, and even Jiro, she would always be a little girl. Their little sister, whom they had to take care of and protect from harm. But, to Jin, well, Ling’er was something else. He wasn’t quite sure why he felt the way he did. Nor did he particularity think it was right. But, he still felt it.
It was a bit dirty, sure. But then, Eddie loved Aoi, who was also his “sister” and several years his junior. It also wasn’t much of a secret that Jiro was sexually attracted to Aoi; or, that he had ‘special’ feelings for Taka. So, if Eddie and Jiro could feel that way – why couldn’t Jin? Still, he did keep it a secret from the others. Because, well, she was sixteen (he had known her since she was seven) and he was twenty-eight. A grown-ass man as Ahjuhssi would say. So, now was the time to let feelings out.
He bought her the yellow dress and told her it suited her beautifully. Ling’er smiled, twirled, and even gave him a hug.
“I’m going to wear it when I see Na Ji Sung.” she told him with another happy smile. “He complains about my clothes. This will show him,” she let her fingers glide over the soft cotton. “a real dress from America; from a California shop where fancy Westerners shop.”
“This Na Ji Sung is your friend?” He felt something hot boiling inside his stomach.
She nodded enthusiastically. “Mm, he’s my new friend; my first and very best one. We got to films together, and we hold hands. And, he buys me treats. He tells me I’m,” Ling’er began to blush slightly. “I’m beautiful. Isn’t he nice?”
“Your best friend? But I thought. . .” Jin trailed off, because Ling’er was giving him a inquisitive look. She really didn’t understand. Still, how could she? Jin had never told her he was in love with her. And, Ling’er seemed much too innocent to notice that sort of thing.
Yet, it still hurt all the same, the thought that he was not her favorite. He was not the one she loved the most. He was just . . . her older brother. Beloved as he was, Jin was not. . .
“My Mason says Ji Sung likes me. He said once that Ji Sung thinks I hung the moon.” she shook her head slightly. “I don’t comprehend that so well. What does that mean.”
Swallowing hard and feeling hot in an odd mix of embarrassment and anger, Jin answered as simply as he could: “It means Na Ji Sung likes you as more than a friend, Ling’er.”
There was a long pause, before Ling’er nodded slowly. “Oh.” she swallowed. “I’ll wear the dress when we go to see a film tomorrow. Because he’ll like it.”
Jin smiled tightly. He didn’t say much to anyone for a couple of days after that.
